My name is Dana, and I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2014. Like most people, I thought of Type 1 as juvenile diabetes. I was wrong. It can happen at any age, and mine arrived during my 40s.
When I was diagnosed my A1c was 8.4, which means my average blood glucose for the 2-3 months before that test was over 200. The goal for diabetics is an A1c under 7.0, and since I was diagnosed and started on multiple daily insulin injections I've kept mine at or under 6.0.
Why am I calling my blog Short and Sweet? Because I'm not the most creative person you'll ever meet. I'm 5'1", so there's the short. And hello, I'm diabetic. So my blood usually has more sugar than yours does, making me extra sweet. Tada, short and sweet! Definitely not too creative, but it fits. Trust me, my other ideas were worse!
I'm creating a blog to help my family and friends understand the disease that changed my life. It's something that is hard to comprehend at times, especially for the people who don't get to see me every day. And really, even the people around me who've learned the most through seeing my day to day adventures with highs and lows may get something out of it too. I know I don't always understand, and T1D is a constant for me. Whoever reads anything here, thanks for coming. I hope this helps.
